Dissociation in Traumatized Children

Trauma Informed Care (TIC) is a widely used concept in the treatment of severely dysregulated children.  These children often present with very confusing behavioral and symptomatic manifestations which often do not respond adequately to psychotropic medications, behavioral reinforcement systems, cognitive interventions, or other typical treatment modalities. While dissociation is widely known in the extant trauma literature as the phenomenon that defines complex trauma, it is poorly understood in mainstream treatments of traumatized children. When this phenomenon is not considered, misdiagnosis and gross misattunements between caregivers and children are often the result.

 Learning Objectives:

  1. A basic understanding of the effects and signs of dissociation which plays a central role in the adaptation to persistent traumatic experience.
  2. Methods to establish meaningful rapport with highly dysregulated children.
  3. The basic tenets of treatment for dissociative children.

This presentation will include extensive lecture, PowerPoint material, and small group discussions.
