Documentation is a long-neglected but cruci ally important aspect of mental health practice. Rather than reducing risk exposure, the electronic medical record is exposing clinicians to greater p rivacy and boundary concerns. Internet and social media pressures are also changing the landscape of mental healthcare. This workshop will provide tra ining on how and why to document, how to think about confidentiality in the medical health record, how to document risk assessments, and how the use o f searches, e-mail, and social media are all changing our understanding of therapeutic boundaries.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this workshop, participants:
1) will understand the basic components of confidentiality and HIPAA
2) be introduced t o formats and important aspects of intake notes and progress notes
3) know the requirements for doing risk assessments for suicidality and violence
4) will understand how boundaries are changing between therapists and clients under the influence of the Internet
About the Presenter:
D r. David Mays, M.D., Ph.D., is a licensed physician in the state o f Wisconsin. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has a dual appointment as a clinical adjunct assistant profes sor in the University of Wisc. Dept. of Psychiatry and Department of Profes sional Development and Applied Studies.
He is a Distinguished Life Fe llow of the American Psychiatric Association, member the Wisconsin Psychiat ric Association, and a member of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Over the last 23 years, Dr, Mays has practiced psychiatry in a variet y of settings, including an HMO, an assertive community treatment program, private clinical and forensic practice, and as the clinical director of the forensic program at the Mendota Mental Health Institute. This forensic pro gram is a 180-bed program with the only maximum security forensic unit in t he state of Wisconsin. Dr. Mays was the treating psychiatrist on the most r estrictive unit in maximum security, housing some of the most dangerous psy chiatric patients in the state.
Dr. Mays has received numerous awards for his teaching and clinical work, including the Distinguished Service Aw ard from the Alliance on Mental Illness in Dane County, the Exemplary Psych iatrist Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Exceptional Performance Award from the Wisconsin Health and Family Services, the 2006 Outstanding Professional Award from the Wisconsin Association on Alcohol an d Other Drug Abuse, and the 2010 Outstanding Mental Health Professional Awa rd from the Wisconsin National Alliance on Mental Illness. He is a highly s ought after presenter on numerous topics in mental health, including psychi atric diagnosis and treatment, personality disorders, suicide and aggressio n risk management, mainstream and alternative treatments in psychiatry, and the biology of ethics..
