Objectives:
At the end of t his seminar, participants will
1) Be able to appreciate the powe r of the placebo effect and how it distorts drug studies
2) Be a ble to refer to a chart that lists medications and side-effects in a way th at is useful for clients
3) Understand how age affects drug meta bolism and why drug studies are complicated by gender bias
4) Un derstand how prescribing medications is a psychosocial intervention.
About the Presenter:
Dr. David Mays, M.D., Ph.D., is a licensed physician in the state of Wisconsin. He is Board Certified by t he American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and has Additional Qualifica tions in Forensic Psychiatry. He has a dual appointment as a clinical adjun ct assistant professor in the University of Wisc. Dept. of Psychiatry and D epartment of Professional Development and Applied Studies.
He is a Li fe Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, member the Wisconsin Psy chiatric Association, and a member of the American Academy of Psychiatry an d the Law. Over the last 23 years, Dr, Mays has practiced psychiatry in a v ariety of settings, including an HMO, an assertive community treatment prog ram, private clinical and forensic practice, and as the clinical director o f the forensic program at the Mendota Mental Health Institute. This forensi c program is a 180-bed program with the only maximum security forensic unit in the state of Wisconsin. Dr. Mays was the treating psychiatrist on the m ost restrictive unit in maximum security, housing some of the most dangerou s psychiatric patients in the state.
Dr. Mays has received numerous a wards for his teaching and clinical work, including the Distinguished Servi ce Award from the Alliance on Mental Illness in Dane County, the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Except ional Performance Award from the Wisconsin Health and Family Services, the 2006 Outstanding Professional Award from the Wisconsin Association on Alcoh ol and Other Drug Abuse, and the 2010 Outstanding Mental Health Professiona l Award from the Wisconsin National Alliance on Mental Illness. He is a hig hly sought after presenter on numerous topics in mental health, including p sychiatric diagnosis and treatment, personality disorders, suicide and aggr ession risk management, mainstream and alternative treatments in psychiatry , and the biology of ethics.
