With the encouragement and
support of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA), the Center for Mental Health
Services (CMHS), dedicated consumers, mental health
providers, and a host of advocacy organizations, successful
efforts to reduce seclusion and restraint usage are being
replicated across the country. To help facilitate this
large-scale culture change, and to assist in the
implementation of proven seclusion and restraint reduction
practices, the National Association of State Mental Health
Program Directors (NASMHPD), through its National Technical
Assistance Center for State Mental Health Planning (NTAC),
sponsored six regional trainings for the National
Executive Training Institute: Creating Violence Free and
Coercion Free Mental Health Treatment Environments for the
Reduction of Seclusion and Restraint.
This training curriculum
contains prepared presentations and accompanying reference
lists for more than a dozen training modules. Each module
was created to address specific aspects of a seclusion and
restraint reduction project.
This curriculum is also intended as a
resource for use in statewide and local initiatives. Though
it is a work-in-progress, this curriculum is current and
comprehensive, and is appropriate for use by systems that
are currently in the initial stages of addressing the
reduction of seclusion and restraint within their
operations. The training curriculum is designed to evolve
over time as future improvements, recommendations, and best
practices are incorporated.
