Crisis De-Escalation: Practical Strategies for Helpful Intervention

Description: At the core of every health care and human service professional is a desire to be helpful. But how can we be helpful in a moment of overwhelming pain and strife? In this training, learn the keys to effective support and care for people experiencing emotional distress and crisis. Through the power of thoughtful communication and non-coercive interactions, attendees will gain knowledge of person-centered and supportive practices that preserve dignity, agency, and choice for the person in crisis. 

Learning Objectives: At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify the precipitating factors that contribute to emotional distress and crisis. 
  • Name 3 challenges to effective crisis intervention and de-escalation.  
  • Develop a persons-strategy for effective de-escalation informed by research and practice.  
Presenter Information: For the past 20 years, Travis Atkinson has dedicated his career to delivering compassionate and creative care to persons living with mental illness. As a behavioral health consultant, his specialties in crisis response, management and leadership practices, hospitality, and musical self-expression have informed his ability to provide tangible solutions to complex problems. Travis is the Director of Clinical & Crisis Services at TBD Solutions, Inc. Travis is a licensed professional counselor, earning his master’s degree in counseling at National-Louis University and his bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of Michigan. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Michigan.  
Travis is a seasoned musician and songwriter, recording six albums over the past 15 years and utilizing music composition as a therapeutic tool for healing. Travis lives with his wife and three daughters in Grand Rapids, MI. He is somewhat ambidextrous but has not yet perfected the two-fingered whistle.
