Cultural Humility in Practice: Understanding and Supporting Latinx Youth and Families Presented by Ramfis L. Márquez, PhD, LPC
*Up to 4 CE credits will be issued to those attending this virtual opportunity. Details: September 17, 2026 (10:00am - 2:30pm) via Zoom (Includes a 30-minute lunch break)
Description: This four-hour virtual workshop explores the intersection of culture, trauma, and mental health in Latinx youth and families through a framework of cultural humility. This training invites clinicians, social workers, educators, psychologists, managers, and community service providers to deepen their understanding of the cultural and historical context shaping the lives of Latinx youth and families. Drawing from psychological, sociocultural, and systemic perspectives, the workshop explores how colonial legacy, generational trauma, immigration, acculturation, and colorism intersect with mental health, identity, and family dynamics.
Participants will learn how concepts such as familismo, personalismo, spirituality, and cultural humility can inform clinical assessment, engagement, and intervention. The session also examines culturally bound syndromes, parenting norms, and the impact of trauma, migration, and social inequities on help-seeking behaviors.
Through reflective dialogue, case examples, and practical strategies, attendees will gain skills to integrate cultural humility into therapeutic practice, strengthen rapport with Latinx families, and improve outcomes across diverse service settings.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to...
- Identify sociocultural, historical, and regional factors influencing Latinx family systems and youth development.
- Describe how acculturation and assimilation processes affect family dynamics, intergenerational communication, and youth adaptation.
- Recognize how colorism, spirituality, machismo, and culturally bound syndromes influence mental health expression and treatment engagement.
- Apply culturally humble and trauma-informed strategies when assessing, conceptualizing, and treating Latinx clients.
- Integrate evidence-based, culturally responsive practices to enhance rapport, trust, and participation among Latinx youth and families.
