Ethics & Boundaries in Youth Work: Between the Classroom and the Therapy Room
Presented by Lisa Anderson, LPC, CSW
*Up to 4 CE credits will be issued to those attending this virtual opportunity.
Details: July 29, 2026 (10:00am - 2:30pm) via Zoom (Includes a 30-minute lunch break)
Description: This training looks at common ethical and boundary challenges that come up when working with children and adolescents in settings like schools, outpatient therapy, and community programs. Providers often have to balance the needs and expectations of youth, families, educators, and other professionals—all at the same time.
We’ll focus on how ethical guidelines and Wisconsin standards (including MPSW 20) apply in real situations, with particular attention to confidentiality, informed consent, parent involvement, dual relationships, and communication across systems.
Using case examples, discussion, and Q&A, we will walk through questions like these:
- What information can be shared about a youth client—and with whom
- How to balance parent rights with a young person’s privacy and trust
- Managing boundaries in settings where roles often overlap
- Responding to requests from schools, caregivers, or others that push beyond your role
- Supporting youth while also considering safety and legal responsibilities
The goal is to keep this practical, so participants leave with clearer ways to think through and respond to real-world situations.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to...
- Apply Wisconsin ethical standards (including MPSW 20) to common situations involving youth
- Recognize when sharing information is appropriate—and when it isn’t
- Identify and navigate boundary challenges and dual relationships in overlapping settings
- Use a clear process to make ethical decisions in complex situations
- Maintain strong therapeutic boundaries while working with youth, families, and other systems
