Cultural Continuity: Navigating Mental Health Challenges in the Hmong Diaspora Presented by Pam Yang, LMFT

Description: With Wisconsin being the home to the third-largest Hmong population in the United States, understanding the unique mental health needs and cultural nuances of this community is crucial for clinicians, providers, mental health professionals, and more. This session aims to equip attendees with the knowledge and considerations necessary providing culturally congruent care to the Hmong Diaspora. Participants will learn about specific mental health challenges faced by the Hmong community, influenced by their rich cultural heritage and experiences of migration and adaptation. By cultivating and understanding of Hmong cultural values, beliefs, and practices, this presentation seeks to enhance the effectiveness and sensitivity of mental health practices, promoting better health outcomes and supporting the well-being of the Hmong population in Wisconsin and beyond.
Learning Objectives:

Understand the significance of clans and how they operate
- Recognize how shame, fear, and mistrust show up and impact Hmong folks
- Learn about Hmong spirituality
- Hear about gender roles and other roles prescribed at birth
- Comprehend Domestic Violence, barriers to help, and why victims stay
- Identify common Hmong communication styles and expressions of love
- Grasp generational trauma and its effects on the Hmong Community
Presenter Information: Pam Yang is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who is committed to offering accessible and culturally congruent services. Pam has experience treating anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma related disorders. Pam works with individuals ages 5 and up, couples, and families and owns her own private practice in Central Wisconsin called Transformation Counseling and Training. In addition to providing therapy services, Pam enjoys sharing information and is always excited to provide education and training, in public or private settings. She has developed and taught several workshops related to the Hmong community, communication, self-care, youth mental health, suicide awareness and prevention, and more.
