The Polyvagal Theory in Practice: Bringing the Wisdom of the Nervous System into Clinical Work Across Populations
Presented by Courtney Rolfe, MA, LCPC

Details: April 20 (9:00am - 4:00pm, including a one-hour lunch break)
*lunch is not provided
**Up to 6 CE credits will be issued to those attending this LIVE, IN-PERSON event. See below for details.

Workshop Description: In this live, in-person workshop, participants will be introduced to a comprehensive understanding of the autonomic nervous system through the lens of the revolutionary Polyvagal Theory. Participants will learn important concepts of the nervous system, such as neurocoption: our internal surveillance system; both our regulated and our adaptive survival states; our highly evolved Social Engagement System; and basic concepts of autonomic safety. Participants will have the opportunity to explore their own nervous system states, engage in mapping exercises to bring this awareness to life, and learn how to bring this wisdom into our work with clients across populations. With this approach, participants can learn how to support a healing environment to promote growth and change, support trauma healing, and teach clients a new way of understanding and managing their experience in the world.

A polyvagal approach fits into Phase One of Phase-based trauma treatment, which is focused on creating safety and stabilization. Learning to create safety and stabilization is an essential first step in using any existing treatment modality. Practitioners can expect improved results in their work by incorporating these crucial concepts into their work.

Learning Objectives: Attendees will be able to...
  • Determine the principles of Polyvagal Theory and how to communicate them in client friendly language.
  • Distinguish three circuits of the autonomic nervous system for use in client psychoeducation.
  • Analyze how the autonomic nervous system operates as an internal surveillance system and its impact on clientshabitual responses to trauma.
  • Determine how to help clients engage the regulating capacities of the autonomic nervous system that create an environment of safety.
  • Determine how to exercise the Social Engagement System to assist clients in becoming more adept in skills of co-regulating and creating reciprocal relationships.
  • Assess for patterns in clientsautonomic states to better inform treatment planning.
